Scouting Makes a Real Difference in the World

It goes far beyond tying knots and taking hikes. Scouting builds true character and helps equip our young people with the ability to act with courage and composure. Please take a moment to read how several Tampa area Scouts and Leaders have bravely responded to real life situations, and you'll see how important it is to instill the values of the Scout Law.

A Scout is Courteous

Alberta Reed, Cubmaster, Pack 64 Scouting is a volunteer organization, and no one knows that better than Alberta Reed. One day in 1968 a man from the local Scout Council office asked her to help organize a Cub Scout pack at the First Baptist Church of College Hill in Tampa, Florida.
Now, 41 years later, she is still involved, making life better for the youth in Tampa. "Volunteer work is something you GIVE from your heart." says Albert Reed, Cubmaster, Pack 64.

A Scout is Brave

Raidel Martinex, Explorer Post 275 On December 24, 2007, Raidel Martinez, a member of Tampa Police Department Explorer Post 275 performed in a heroic fashion. He was in a routine ride-along program with Corporal Danny Hernandez when they were called to investigate a home break in. Raidel remained in the cruiser, per policy, but become concerned when the perpetrator overpowered Corporal Hernandez and began striking the officer with the night stick.
At that point, Raidel exited the cruiser and engaged the perpetrator, pulling him off Corporal Hernandez. the perpetrator struck Raidel across the face, knocking him away and was nearly able to grab the officer's service revolver when Raidel again engaged him - this time holding him until assistance arrived. Corporal Hernandez and the Chief of Police agreed that, were is not for the quick, brave and selfless actions of the young explorer, the incident would have had a much different and, quite likely, a tragic ending for Corporal Hernandez. Raidel Hernandez received the prestigious Lifesaving Award with Honors from the National Learning for Life Division.

A Scout is Helpful

Members of Troop 11 The Scouts of Troop 11, while on a white water adventure on the Nantahala River encountered a family whose craft had capsized. One lady appeared to be unconscious; she was laying face down in the water and unable to turn around.
The boat guide moved the Scouts into position to where two Scouts could pull her into the boat. They maneuvered their raft toward the embankment and held onto the shrubbery on the side of the river to keep from being swept downstream. They waited until rescue personnel arrived to provide emergency treatment.
In fact, as they were waiting for the rescue squad, the lady regained consciousness and looked up at one of the Scouts - the smallest in the group - and said, "Thank you; you saved my life!" Without skipping a beat the Scout replied, "That's o.k. We're Scouts - that's what we do."
